Pandemic pushes insurers to launch cashless OPD health insurance plans

Covid-19 has made possible the faster adoption of digital methods for the treatment of OPDs like telemedicine and online pharmacy. Following the trend, several insurers have recently launched their OPD health insurance plans. The latest to jump on the bandwagon is Bajaj Allianz General Insurance with the launch of the “Health Prime” endorsement.

This rider can be used with existing and new company health and personal accident insurance policies.

The Health Prime rider covers 4 key areas namely – Tele-consultation coverage where you can opt for unlimited consultations with a doctor on the provider’s digital platform; Guaranteed Medical Consultation where the client can consult a doctor in person in the centers of the service provider’s prescribed network or outside his network; Investigations Support for pathology or radiology costs from prescribed or external network centers; and finally, an annual preventive health check-up cover in which the policyholder can benefit from a free preventive health check-up once per insurance year according to the tests mentioned. All of these benefits are completely cashless.

The premium for the rider ranges from Rs 63 to Rs 1,084 excluding GST and 3 plans on a floating basis with a premium ranging from Rs 1,146 to Rs 2,348 excluding GST. The company has partnered with Bajaj Finserv Health, a healthcare technology company that will leverage its network of more than 2,500 lab chains and 90,000 physicians, to serve policyholders.

Recently, ICICI Lombard also launched the BeFit policy, which covers cashless OPD services where one can book doctor’s appointment through its app, including physical and virtual consultation by GPs, specialists and super-specialists as well. as physiotherapy sessions.

The insurer has established relationships with more than 11,000 doctors in 20 cities. The pharmacy service covers medicines delivered to the home and laboratory tests both at home and during a visit to the center. The product also offers 24/7 consultations (telephone and virtual) by the insurer’s panel of medical experts.

The basic hospital policy only covers hospital costs. Purchasing an OPD rider can give an extra layer of coverage. However, one of the important factors to consider before purchasing an OPD plan is that there should be enough doctors in the network for a quick consultation with a doctor.

“Then there is the coverage allocated by the insurance company for the treatment of OPD as a whole and the consultation fees which should be sufficient for the doctor’s consultation, drugs and laboratory tests. Finally, the OPD facility should be available throughout the day so that in case someone needs an installation for odd hours, they should be available to them, ”said Naval Goel, Founder and CEO of
